Research in the field of nutritional biochemistry has shown that nutrients can modulate gene expression and therefore regulate biochemical mechanisms.
This has been defined as Nutrigenomics. The EFSA recommends that researchers should be able to show, with an overall vision of the system, how nutrients affect biochemical processes.
Some points still require further study and new methodologies if the interaction between nutrients and genes, and the consequences of this interaction, are to be determined. The CTNS is involved in a variety of research lines that are striving to establish methodologies to describe the molecular basis for the action of bioactive ingredients.
